August Bank Holiday FIDE Tournament in Brentwood
British Chess, in partnership with the EJCA and Brentwood School, organised a FIDE-rated weekend
of chess over August Bank Holiday weekend for adults and juniors. There was a three-day standard game with 26 players and a one-day rapid game with 92 players.
Top seed Savas Stoica (FIDE rating 2150) won the standard play on 6/7. Essex juniors Nina
Pert, Max Pert (top U1800 player), Olga Latypova (top female player), Jaden Omoruyi and Luoke
Wang were part of a very strong field.
The rapid play was divided into two sections – the Open and Under 1300. Junior players finished 1st and 2nd
in both sections to win premium subscriptions to the new chess learning platform www.gchess.com
(kindly donated by GingerGM Simon Williams) as part of their prize.
George Zhao won the Open on 5.5/6, with Anirudh Shidlagatta 2nd on tiebreak with 5/6 from another
junior Supratit Banerjee and Martin James.
Brentwood School’s Markos Mouratidis won the U1300 with 5.5/6, with Grace Wilde 2nd on tiebreak
from fellow Essex junior Joshua Puthanveetill, Jane Scott and Lam Vy Nguyen. They all finished on
5/6.
